Email [email protected]. That reaches a person, and we aim to reply within two business days. There is no support form, no ticket number, and no chatbot — just email.
What to email us about
- A question that looks wrong for your state. These are the fastest things to get fixed, and the most useful reports we get. Include your state and the wording of the question if you can.
- Bugs and crashes. Tell us what you were doing, what happened, and which iPhone or iPad model and iOS version you are on. If it is reproducible, the steps to reproduce it are worth more than anything else you can send.
- A state requirement that has changed. Handbooks and GDL rules get revised more often than app updates ship. If your state's hours, ages, or holding periods no longer match what the site says, tell us and we will update it.
- Purchase problems. If the ad-free purchase did not apply, try Restore Purchases first — App Store purchases are tied to your Apple Account, so restoring usually fixes it. If it does not, email us. Refunds themselves are handled by Apple, not by us.
- Feature requests. We read all of them. We do not promise any of them.
- Privacy questions. The privacy policy is the detailed answer, but if something in it is unclear, ask.
Reporting a bug
Two routes, and they do different things:
- Email us at [email protected] if you want it fixed. We can ask follow-up questions, and you will hear back when it ships.
- Leave an App Store review if you want other people to know about it. We read reviews, but we cannot reply to them individually or ask you for details through them, so a review alone rarely gets a bug fixed. Doing both is the fastest path.
Useful details for any bug report: what you tapped, what you expected, what happened instead, your device model, your iOS version, and whether you are on the free or ad-free version.
Try these first — they answer most questions
- The FAQ — pricing, offline use, accounts, exporting the log, privacy, Android, and how PermitReady compares to RoadReady.
- The driving hours log — what it records, how sharing works, and what it is not.
- Hours by state and night hours by state — the numbers for all 50 states plus DC.
- Your state's page — permit test format, passing score, minimum age, and the licensing steps that follow.
- The permit test study guide — what is on the test and how to prepare for it.
- The parent's guide — supervision rules, certification forms, and how to run practice sessions.
Who you are actually emailing
PermitReady is built by Joshua Gilmour and published under TechSmog. It is an indie app — a very small team, no support department, no investors, and no driving school behind it. That has two consequences worth setting expectations about: replies come from someone who actually wrote the app and can fix the thing you are reporting, and they arrive on a human schedule rather than instantly. More about who builds this.

What we can't help with
Said plainly so nobody waits on a reply that cannot come:
- Anything to do with your actual permit or license. We are not a DMV and have no access to state systems, appointments, test results, or records. Contact your state agency.
- The Next Street's PermitReady course. Different company, same name. We cannot see their accounts, schedules, or payments.
- RoadReady accounts. If you are locked out of RoadReady, only Safe Roads Alliance can fix that. Our troubleshooting notes cover what you can try yourself.
- Recovering a lost driving log. There is no server copy. See below.
- Legal advice about GDL rules, insurance, or liability.
Frequently asked questions
How long will it take to hear back?
Usually within two business days. PermitReady is built by a very small team, so replies come from a person rather than a ticket queue — which means they are useful, and occasionally slower than a call center would be.
Can you help with my DMV appointment, permit, or license?
No. We are an independent app developer, not a licensing agency, and we have no access to any state's systems, records, or appointments. For anything to do with your actual permit, license, road test, or paperwork, contact your state's DMV, RMV, BMV, DPS, or equivalent directly.
I'm looking for The Next Street's PermitReady course.
Different company. This PermitReady is a free iPhone app from TechSmog. The Next Street is a Connecticut and Massachusetts driving school that runs a separate product with the same name at permitready.thenextstreet.com. We have no access to their courses, schedules, accounts, or payments. See the about page for the full explanation.
Can you recover my driving log?
We cannot, and it is worth understanding why. PermitReady has no servers and no accounts — your log is stored only on your device. That means nobody can lock you out of it, and it also means there is no backup copy on our end to restore. Share a copy of the log to a parent occasionally (AirDrop, Messages, or Mail) and you always have one somewhere else.
Important Notice
- PermitReady is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by any DMV, RMV, BMV, DPS, or state agency.
- No state has formally approved or rejected PermitReady's driving log as a substitute for an official state form. Always confirm with your state agency what log format they accept.
- Requirements shown on this page are approximate and change. Verify current rules with your state licensing agency before your road test.
