Who can supervise practice driving in Utah
Utah's rule is standard, and the driver education course is where most families get the log form in the first place.
- A licensed driver at least 21 years old — a parent, guardian, or responsible adult — in the front passenger seat.
- A certified driving instructor qualifies during course sessions.
- Instructor hours and supervised hours are different. The behind-the-wheel time in driver education does not count toward the 40.
Night hours, and what "night" means here
Utah asks for 10 hours after sunset, which is a cleaner standard than most states' unqualified "night" — sunset is a specific, lookup-able time for any date. In Salt Lake City that means anything after about 5:05 PM in December and after 9 PM in late June, so the winter half of the year is dramatically more efficient. Utah-specific conditions worth doing in the dark: canyon roads where the grade and the curves come together, winter inversions where visibility drops and roads stay icy all day, and the long unlit stretches of I-15 and I-70 where the only reference is your own headlights.
What counts as a loggable hour
- Public-road driving with a qualified supervisor counts. The trip to school, errands, highway miles, practice loops around the neighborhood — it all counts as long as the permit holder is at the wheel and the supervising driver is in the front passenger seat.
- Time parked, idling, or waiting in a drive-through does not count. Log driving time, not trip time.
- Empty parking lots and closed courses generally do not count. The point of the requirement is real traffic.
- Hours before the permit was issued do not count. The permit has to be in hand first.
- Canyon and mountain driving deserves its own attention. Utah does not require it, but downhill grades, runaway-truck ramps, and snowpack on a canyon road are ordinary here and nothing like valley driving.
How to actually get to 40 hours
Forty hours over the six-month permit period is about ninety minutes a week. The night share is the constraint, especially for a permit issued in spring: 10 hours after sunset in June means driving after 9 PM, which most families will not do. Front-load the after-sunset hours in whatever dark months your permit period covers.
