Who can supervise practice driving in Rhode Island

Night hours, and what "night" means here
Ten of the 50 hours have to be at night. The DMV does not publish a clock definition, so treat night as actual darkness — after sunset, before sunrise. Providence is dark by about 4:20 PM in December and holds light past 8:15 PM in June, so late fall through winter is the efficient window. Rhode Island-specific night practice worth doing: I-95 through Providence at night, where the interchanges come fast and the lighting is uneven; the bridges to Aquidneck Island in wind and rain; and unlit stretches in South County where the road edge is hard to read.
What counts as a loggable hour
- Public-road driving with a qualified supervisor counts. The trip to school, errands, highway miles, practice loops around the neighborhood — it all counts as long as the permit holder is at the wheel and the supervising driver is in the front passenger seat.
- Time parked, idling, or waiting in a drive-through does not count. Log driving time, not trip time.
- Empty parking lots and closed courses generally do not count. The point of the requirement is real traffic.
- Hours before the permit was issued do not count. The permit has to be in hand first.
- Distance is not the point in a small state. Fifty hours in Rhode Island means a lot of the same roads. Vary the time of day and the weather instead of chasing new routes.
How to actually get to 50 hours
Fifty hours over the six-month permit period is about two hours a week. In a state you can cross in 45 minutes, that means the hours come from routine trips rather than expeditions — school, work, the grocery store, a sibling's practice. Deliberately add rotary practice, highway merging, and city parking, which are the three things Rhode Island drivers need and a suburban loop never teaches.
