Who can supervise practice driving in Oklahoma
The supervision rule is standard; the agency change is the part worth knowing before you drive to an office.
- A licensed driver at least 21 years old in the front passenger seat.
- A licensed driving instructor qualifies during a lesson.
- Go to Service Oklahoma or a licensed operator location, not a DPS office. Licensing moved, and directions from a few years ago are wrong.
Night hours, and what "night" means here
Ten of the 50 hours have to be at night. Service Oklahoma does not publish a rigid clock definition, so treat night as actual darkness — after sunset, before sunrise. In Oklahoma City and Tulsa, December is dark by about 5:20 PM and June light lasts until nearly 8:50 PM, so winter evenings are the efficient window. Oklahoma-specific conditions worth practicing after dark: two-lane highways with no shoulder lighting and heavy truck traffic, and the transition on and off the turnpikes where speeds change fast. Storm season is its own separate argument for extra practice — not a state requirement, but heavy rain and wind on I-35 will find any gap in a new driver's skills.
What counts as a loggable hour
- Public-road driving with a qualified supervisor counts. The trip to school, errands, highway miles, practice loops around the neighborhood — it all counts as long as the permit holder is at the wheel and the supervising driver is in the front passenger seat.
- Time parked, idling, or waiting in a drive-through does not count. Log driving time, not trip time.
- Empty parking lots and closed courses generally do not count. The point of the requirement is real traffic.
- Hours before the permit was issued do not count. The permit has to be in hand first.
- Spring storms are worth logging deliberately. Oklahoma does not require weather hours, but hail, wind, and sudden downpours are ordinary here and terrifying the first time you meet them alone.
How to actually get to 50 hours
Fifty hours over the six-month permit period is about two hours a week. The most common Oklahoma failure mode is the same as everywhere: plenty of daytime hours and not nearly enough after dark. Ten night hours is roughly twenty evening drives, so put one on the calendar each week from the beginning rather than trying to compress them into the last month.
