Who may supervise driving practice in California
- A California-licensed driver age 25 or older — note that California's threshold is 25, not the 21 used by most states.
- A licensed parent, guardian, spouse, or employer also qualifies to supervise.
- Seated in the front passenger seat, close enough to take control of the vehicle at any time.
- A licensed driving instructor during the required 6 hours of professional training.
The 25-year-old rule catches families out. An aunt who is 23 and has been driving for seven years is not a valid supervisor in California unless she is the permit holder's guardian or spouse.
What counts as a loggable hour
- Driving on public roads with a qualified supervisor counts — freeway, surface streets, canyon roads, the lot.
- Night means 11 PM to 5 AM in California. This is the detail people get wrong most often. A 7:30 PM drive in December is dark, but it is not a California night hour. Ten hours between 11 PM and 5 AM takes planning — late returns from events, early-morning airport runs, and deliberate late drives with a parent.
- The 6 professional hours are separate. Do not count driving-school time toward the 50, and do not assume the 50 covers the 6.
- Parking lots and private property generally do not count.
- Parked and idling time does not count.
- Nothing before the instruction permit was issued counts.
