Who can supervise practice driving in Arizona
Arizona keeps this simple, and the 12-month permit expiration is the detail that actually catches people out.
- A licensed driver at least 21 years old must be in the front passenger seat for the entire drive.
- A certified driving instructor also qualifies during a lesson.
- Watch the permit expiration. Arizona instruction permits run 12 months. The minimum holding period is only six months, so there is room — but if the permit lapses before the road test you are renewing and re-testing, and the hours you logged do not carry any weight until you have a valid permit again.
Night hours, and what "night" means here
Arizona asks for 10 of the 30 hours at night. The MVD does not publish a rigid clock definition, so the safe reading is actual darkness — between sunset and sunrise. In Phoenix and Tucson that means the window opens around 7:30 PM in June and closer to 5:30 PM in December, which makes winter the efficient season for night hours: an after-dinner drive counts, and you are not keeping a fifteen-year-old up past 10 PM to get it. One Arizona-specific note worth planning for: a third of your total has to be after dark, and desert night driving off the interstate is genuinely dark, with unlit shoulders and wildlife. Mix lit city streets with at least a few darker roads.
What counts as a loggable hour
- Public-road driving with a qualified supervisor counts. The trip to school, errands, highway miles, practice loops around the neighborhood — it all counts as long as the permit holder is at the wheel and the supervising driver is in the front passenger seat.
- Time parked, idling, or waiting in a drive-through does not count. Log driving time, not trip time.
- Empty parking lots and closed courses generally do not count. The point of the requirement is real traffic.
- Hours before the permit was issued do not count. The permit has to be in hand first.
- Monsoon driving is worth logging deliberately. Arizona does not require bad-weather hours, but July and August dust storms and flash flooding are the conditions that put new Arizona drivers in ditches. If a safe opportunity comes up with a calm adult in the passenger seat, take it.
How to actually get to 30 hours
Thirty hours over the six-month permit period is about 75 minutes a week — genuinely light. The trap is the night share. Ten night hours is roughly twenty half-hour evening drives, and families who do all their practice on weekend mornings arrive at month five with 28 daytime hours and two night hours. Set a standing weeknight drive from the beginning: to the store, to a sibling's practice, anything after dark.
